1. What is the JAG Branch?

The Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch is the legal branch of the Pakistan Army, based at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. It provides legal advice and legal services to the Army and handles military justice. The branch is headed by the Judge Advocate General, a Major General. Military law in Pakistan is mainly based on the Pakistan Army Act 1952 and the rules made under it. The JAG Branch makes sure that discipline, courts martial and other legal matters follow this law.

The Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Air Force have their own separate JAG/Legal branches. This page covers the Pakistan Army only.

2. What does a JAG Legal Officer do?

  • Advises commanders and staff on military law, civil law and constitutional matters.
  • Helps conduct and supervise courts martial and other disciplinary proceedings under the Pakistan Army Act.
  • Reviews court-martial proceedings and disciplinary cases to check that they follow the law.
  • Drafts and reviews legal documents, contracts, agreements and service matters.
  • Represents or assists the Army in cases before courts and tribunals, and coordinates with civil lawyers when needed.
  • Gives legal training and awareness to officers and soldiers.
In short, a JAG officer is a commissioned Army officer and a lawyer. You wear the uniform and hold an officer’s rank while working in the legal field.
